Baked Ziti

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Step 2: Cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. Step 3: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until softened.
  4. Step 4: Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  5. Step 5: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for about 10-15 minutes.
  6. Step 6: In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth.
  7. Step 7: In a large baking dish, layer half of the cooked ziti, half of the meat sauce, and half of the ricotta mixture. Sprinkle a third of the mozzarella cheese on top.
  8. Step 8: Repeat the layers with the remaining ziti, meat sauce, ricotta, and mozzarella cheese.
  9. Step 9: Top the final layer with the grated Parmesan cheese.
  10. Step 10: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  11. Step 11: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  12. Step 12: Let the baked ziti cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
