Ingredients
- 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
- Lettuce, tomato slices, and avocado for serving
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with some chunks remaining.
- Step 2: Add breadcrumbs, red onion, cilantro, egg, cumin, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper to the mashed beans and mix until well combined.
- Step 3: Form the mixture into 4 equal patties, pressing firmly to ensure they hold together.
- Step 4: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until they are browned and heated through.
- Step 5: If using cheese, place a slice on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking, cover the skillet, and allow the cheese to melt.
- Step 6: Toast the hamburger buns in the oven or on a skillet until lightly browned.
- Step 7: Assemble the burgers by placing each patty on a bun and topping with lettuce, tomato slices, and avocado.
- Step 8: Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious black bean burgers!
