Chocolatines are delightful French pastries filled with rich chocolate, perfect for breakfast or a sweet snack.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 egg yolk (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Step 1: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Step 2: In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cubed butter and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Step 3: Add the yeast mixture, egg, and vanilla extract to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Step 4: Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Step 5: Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Evenly spread the chocolate chips over the dough.
- Step 6: Roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other to form a log. Cut the log into 8 equal pieces.
- Step 7: Place the pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Step 8: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk with water and brush over the chocolatines.
- Step 9: Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown. Let them cool slightly before serving.
