Nashville Hot Chicken is a spicy, crispy, and flavorful Southern classic that delivers a fiery kick with every bite.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs chicken thighs and drumsticks
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup hot sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk and 1 tablespoon of hot sauce, then add the chicken pieces and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
- Step 2: In another bowl, mix the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Step 3: Remove the chicken from the marinade, letting excess buttermilk drip off, and coat each piece in the seasoned flour mixture.
- Step 4: In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F.
- Step 5: Carefully fry the chicken in batches, about 6-8 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through.
- Step 6: Transfer the fried chicken to a wire rack to drain excess oil.
- Step 7: In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat, then stir in the remaining hot sauce and brown sugar until combined.
- Step 8: Brush the spicy butter sauce generously over the fried chicken pieces before serving.
