Pulled Pork

Ingredients

  • 4-5 lbs pork shoulder (also known as pork butt)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce (for serving)
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth or water

Instructions

  1. Step 1: 1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Step 2: 2. In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper.
  3. Step 3: 3. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it is evenly coated.
  4. Step 4: 4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the pork shoulder on all sides until browned (about 3-4 minutes per side).
  5. Step 5: 5. Place the seared pork shoulder in a large roasting pan or Dutch oven.
  6. Step 6: 6. Pour the apple cider vinegar and chicken broth (or water) into the pan around the pork.
  7. Step 7: 7. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil or a lid.
  8. Step 8: 8. Bake in the preheated oven for 4-6 hours, or until the pork is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  9. Step 9: 9. Once cooked, remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for about 15-20 minutes.
  10. Step 10: 10. Use two forks to shred the pork into bite-sized pieces.
  11. Step 11: 11. Mix the shredded pork with your favorite barbecue sauce and serve on buns, in tacos, or alongside your favorite sides.
