Roasted Turkey

Ingredients

  • 1 whole turkey (12-14 pounds)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
  • 1 lemon, halved
  • 2 onions, quartered
  • 2 carrots, cut into chunks
  • 2 celery stalks, cut into chunks
  • 2 cups chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Step 2: Remove the turkey giblets and pat the turkey dry with paper towels.
  3. Step 3: In a small bowl, mix together the butter, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and rosemary to create a herb butter.
  4. Step 4: Gently loosen the skin over the turkey breast and thighs and spread the herb butter underneath the skin and over the turkey.
  5. Step 5: Place the lemon halves, one of the quartered onions, and some of the carrot and celery chunks inside the turkey cavity.
  6. Step 6: Truss the turkey legs with kitchen twine and tuck the wings under the body.
  7. Step 7: Place the remaining onions, carrots, and celery in a roasting pan and set a rack on top, then place the turkey on the rack.
  8. Step 8: Pour the chicken broth into the bottom of the roasting pan.
  9. Step 9: Roast the turkey in the preheated oven for about 3 to 3.5 hours, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh reads 165°F (74°C).
  10. Step 10: Let the turkey rest for at least 20 minutes before carving and serving.
