A rich and creamy sausage gravy perfect for pouring over warm, flaky biscuits.
Ingredients
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions
- Step 1: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and crumbled, about 8-10 minutes.
- Step 2: Remove the cooked sausage from the skillet and set aside, leaving the sausage drippings in the pan.
- Step 3: Add the unsalted butter to the skillet and melt over medium heat.
- Step 4: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the melted butter and drippings, whisking constantly to form a roux.
- Step 5: Slowly add the whole milk to the roux, whisking continuously to avoid lumps, and cook until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Step 6: Return the cooked sausage to the skillet and stir to combine.
- Step 7: Season the gravy with salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder, adjusting to taste.
- Step 8: Simmer the gravy for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through.
- Step 9: Serve the sausage gravy hot over freshly baked biscuits.
